MIXTURIZER - "mxtrzr" [R.O.N.F Records - 2009]

Nothing like a good collection of noise to get your blood flowing in the morning!! Prolific Spanish experimental musician and R.O.N.F Records co-owner, Manuel M. Cubas, unleashes his opus of ear-ripping, mind-melting, skin-brittling sound exercises on this CD-R compilation.

This work, entitled “mxtrzr” is a compilation of work he’s done over the course of this project’s 4-year existence, across his already very expansive discography. Mixturizer has yet to release a full CD-album, but you can definitely regard this compilation as a complete work. An introduction to the nerve-shredding psychosis that is Manuel’s specialty.

I’ve listened to quite a number of noise artists, perhaps have witnessed more live acts than have actually bought albums, but very few work so efficiently at getting under your skin the way this guy does. Even at low volumes, I’ve often walked away from this CD feeling more than a little light-headed. The textures and frequencies he uses work in such a way that you feel you are being peeled, layer by layer, rather than having sounds drilled into your head as with many of the Japanese artists. He will start off subtle, then use repetition while gradually becoming more and more course and discomforting, and just when you feel you’re becoming used to it, he will turn up the frequency, or do something else to push your mind to the snapping point. It’s actually quite ingenious.

The first song is a great example of this. It uses the medium of high-frequency crackles and whines over it’s length to numb, unnerve, and finally strip the mind of all resistence, before climbing right up into the highest frequencies before changing gears and descending into a clamor of low sounds and subtle amorphous textures resembling the sensation of hearing voices in the wind.

Each track uses a different medium of hypnotic sounds to work in different ways of turning the knobs of your mind the wrong way.

I was once introduced to the power of theta wave technology, and I wouldn’t doubt it if it was being employed here. The frequencies can be sheerly overwhelming at times. My cheap ass CDJ set tends to crap out any time I try to play this CD. Also, the transition between the tracks is definitely NOT subtle and occasionally startling during sudden changes as the previous track fades out.

The second track features escalating waves of oscillating spacey sounds, while the next track is a full-on blast of low-high frequency deafening static that comes on as a roar and leaves you with no escape, it slowly morphs into something resembling metallic explosions.

Track four contains some very simple ghostly organ sounds that rise, fall, and cut out in volume as the sounds suddenly switch from one pitch to another. There’s one track that features samples from underrated experimental music guru Maurizio Bianchi, which comes off as an enveloping clamor of all forms of metallic objects.

This CD would definitely appeal to all fans of noise, experimental, and even musique concrete, but is most definitely NOT for the timid. It’s also got a definite surreal side to it, and with it’s variety of different sound textures used, it will never bore the listener. Different sounds resemble different objects and shades of paint used in portraying a very vivid jarring landscape of color and texture. Beautiful, but in no way whatsoever tame or gentle.

A rewarding experience awaits those with an open mind and appetite for surrealistic sound. Perhaps I SHOULD tell you that if you’re new to noise, to start off with a tamer record, but the true noise music fan inside me honestly tells you no introduction would be better!!

WEREWOLF JERUSALEM & WASP HONEYMOON - "Próximas Víctimas" [R.O.N.F Records - 2008]

'Próximas Víctimas' is an edgy, offten active & brutal Giallo influenced HNW collaboration between Richard Ramirez's most know solo project Werewolf Jerusalem & Wasp Honeymoon which features Geoff Markoff(S.S. Electronics, Viking Movement,) & Alison Rowe(Nurse Unit, Rinne).

The release only lasts just over the twenty five minute mark, but the trio really pack in a lot of textural shifts & brutal sonic dips & riser’s through-out the four tracks on offer here. It all kicks in nice ‘n’ nasty with the just over two minutes of ‘Part 1’ that's all about nice searing rumbling's meeting juddering static tones which is all unlined by this grim sort of bassy drone which gives a nice oppressive air giving & brings to mind the feel of a victim hiding from his Killer in a wardrobe or under a bed.

‘Part2’ hacks straight into to you with a shrill teeth-grating jitter like you’ve just being stab very hard in the head a few times. Then we drop into a few minutes of great ominous & nightmarish clouds of tolling ambience that are overhang by deep static crunch; but pretty soon your slammed back up into ‘wall’ territory with brutal velocity. Yet the track still keeps it’s grim ambient & rumbling under base- the rest of the track nicely shifts texturally gears from one seared & dammed ‘wall’ after another in a nice often jolting & brutal execrating manner.

‘Part 3’ is the longest track here at just under the fifteen minute mark & it starts out with a nice thick & punishing wall of dark sound. The 'wall' sort of sounds like semi slowed mass of voodoo drums that are lined with static builds 'n' grinds, as the track progresses the wall of sound just gets thicker & thicker, more airless & oppressive in it’s feeling like it's pressing out all the light & air from your listening space. This track feels like the killer is feverishly working on slice, peeling & dismembering your desiccated corpse. As the track grinds & drills on the trio nicely shift & morph textural roars, groans & drags with-in the thick wall of sound, through there are no great sudden shifts or rapid stabs of sound like the second track- this track is more about slowly craving & gutting of all hope(and your organs) away!.

The CDR comes in a very nice thick see-through plastic case that has on the outside a black gloved hand holding a straight razor & on the inside a picture of the stretched out & blood soaked murder victim- both pictures are done in grainy and slightly off focus black & white which really fits the albums nasty, blacked & murderous sonic tone. I can safely this is one of best examples of brutal & sleazy- yet often darkly atmospheric Giallo influenced HNW I’ve come across & it comes in such a classy/ fitting package too. A heavy duty collaboration between the old master Maurizio Bianchi and Maor Appelbaum, a younger player in the field of noise music. Although both get a credit for writing the music, it is mixed by Appelbaum, which is not uncommon. Many of the current Bianchi albums feature him as a musician, but never as the person to finish the collaboration. Its a bit of a mystery what his role is. Does he send sound files to the other who then remixes them? It seems so. Two pieces here of some excellent noise drone music. Whatever the input - either some sort of synthesizer sounds or perhaps the recordings of a washing machine - it used to trigger a whole bunch of sound effects that makes the work top heavy. There is constant change running through these pieces, always something going on, without making many new directions, more a further deepening of the various themes in the sound material available. Crashing, cascading sounds, like thunderous storms wail upon the listener. This is noise indeed, but this is noise that I like. The drone element is amplified, neh exploded to the very top end, and this is a perfect example of industrial music. It cleanses your ears and refreshes your mind. Better than the real neurotransmitters. (FdW)

Mystified "Science Fiction" Review on Heathen Harvest

Mystified's Science fiction starts of with Thomas Park’s trademark drones backed with a punctual beat; however Cold Radiance holds the radiating drone as a constant with the repeated beat moving from background to foreground. Park immediately holds true to form demonstrating the twin skills of minimal usage of elements and title/track harmony. The beat vanishes leaving Haunted Drone combine a haunted drone and atmospheric treble atmospheric shimmer. The drone moves in depth across the track to good effect, keeping the listeners attention fixed. Deep Freq takes the level right down to a rumble, that teeters on the edge of distortion, combined with the shifts in low frequency, the levels of crackle are edged slightly creating a dance between the two. Ten and Two takes over the distortion this time moving alongside a sharp frequency, distorted crackling is now taking prominence of Science Fiction the speed of the crackling changes alongside that of the sharp frequency; this shifts the levels of intensity well. The elements combined shift to such extreme that Mystified enters the area of power electronics for a brief instant. Moscow follows suite with an intensified humming motorized drone with the beat re-entering.

The beat remains sharp allowing the drones to mutate, the basic beat is dorky, timeless and funny, the sounds remind one how over motorized Moscow is vehicle wise; there are also nods to Kraftwerk’s Autobahn made here . Carnival Drone combines a carnivalesqe drone with backing sounds hidden well to an almost subliminal frequency, this shows a difference with a slightly more prominent ghostly darkness than other releases. Science Fiction hits unusually quickly with three elements that immediately make the mind think of UFO/extra terrestrial life forms, whilst continuing to revel in darkness. Spatial awareness is also shown in the timeframe to good effect, the sounds also sound like they are trying to communicate. Polar Midnight continues with scope of space but with a deep humming drone that remains in a limbo that is neither in the forefront or background. Happening gives a return of static with a shift in sound given by an airy wind like sound. Sustain offers combines melodic organ like sounds and dark channeled atmospheres to a wind down finale and simply vanishes.

Science Fiction is another well thought out album by Mystified with a sci-fi bent, sending the brain into overdrive, Blade Runner should have yet another directors cut, but this time with this as the soundtrack.

"Altered Neurologycal Function" Review on Heathen Harvest

Altered Neurological function is a compilation of artists from around the world, some share similarities, some are vastly different. Darth / Nader set the mood to a bleak atmospheric ambience immediately. Darth/Nader is Jared Butler and Cory Thrall, their track ‘Sleeping in Shifts’ is pleasingly dark, and unsettling for its one sudden jolt of noise. That works well, in their being a slap with the build up of ambience, nice touch. Thee mighty Ctephin continue with their usual majestic build up of atmosphere, as a Ctephin fan, they are on full form here with Jupiter Invocation. (Their Thee Dreamtime is a well recommended release) Their occult overtones are compelling and forever developing onwards and upwards; on here they move the discs mood on well into a mystic ambient territory.

Tzesne break in with Fundar La Primera which is a barrage of low level noise which hums and crackles with an overlay of unpleasant tone and samples. Serving as a good control of low level noise to good effect, Fundar breaks up as quickly as it broke in. Mystified contribute a track from their Foiled Again album, Static Surfer pulls back slightly from the full throttle reached by the first three tracks; Static Surfer is one of their more intense tracks and fits in well here.

C_Utter from Spain produce a more tonal drone with damaged voice sampling thrown into the mix. This gradually breaks into a power electronics/noise work out. Texas based Death Trance combine drone with a tunnel like effect, it is a little less full on than some of the previous tracks yet holds the darkness well. Netherlands Kristus Kut creates sound by hitting treated string instruments along with programming on Sinking Into Silent Dreams offers a piece of well executed solemn atmospheric drone that initially feels as if it is nodding to the sci-fi soundtracks of the 70s and 80s. It is punctuated throughout by percussive strings, which takes it well away from being just an exercise in nostalgia.

Swamps up Nostrils’ atmospheres sound like they are from another planet on Herr Probe the low level sound of this track follows through well and continues on a similar level with Flat Effect. Their track Eighth Circle is a strong piece of low level ambient experimentation, with drone and a lot more interesting minor details.

Project Horsed breaks in with an old style industrial/ambient giving an effective combination of drone and looped sounds overlaid with different sounds to good effect and change throughout Sub. Norss is no longer with us, operating now under the name ULv, however their offering Ritueel Bloedvergieten bubbles under the surface at a low level, never rising. Flowers of Flesh and Blood surface immediately with harsh ambience or what I would call Power Electronic Ambience, distortion and unpleasant feedback provide the two main characteristics, with the distortion pulsing and the feedback changing tone, by far the most Altered Neurologically Functioning track on here, slight yet harsh. No share Flowers.. title as Neurological shift champions, they start off sounding in a similar vein to Chrome with feedback threatening to break into riff, yet it never does shifting into an exciting ritualistic intensity, guitars eventually surface, but not how I expected them .No exist in their own territory and don’t use the Chromisms to drop into Skullflower territory, their nearest contemporary being P.A.R.A.

Overall Altered Neurological Function is a wide range of approaches represented in the noise/experimental underground, the album moves along smoothly in its wide range of sounds. The artists all provide strong tracks and they all play off each other well. This is a strong compilation in a slimline DVD case; it sets a high standard for future volumes.

MIXTURIZER MXTRZR (CDr by R.O.N.F. Records)
I thought I had reviewed more than just a comp but then perhaps I'm not thinking.. Here the electronics go through slow processing and manipulations - slow enough to be predictable and almost precisely atypical of any conventional western music. Compare with Spruit where the chop up offers a different more open approach to the development of forms more akin to their digital genesis. There is a massive hour and 8 minutes here - some latter tracks of almost sheer harsh noise others play with rhythms devices and real feedback. The more "live" the pieces the better, the human as opposed to microsecond digital manipulations. This focuses on an important issue - to engage in change today the need is to rely on the hyperfast logic switching of cybernetics or else deny change in the move to HWN. To "hear" the foot moving the wah wah or hear the hand turning the filter / oscillator is to remove us back into a past which is dead and gone. So the last track is the most successful of the 9 apart from the needless fade into reverb. Still the old gods work - "The old habit, however, of associating a goal with every event and a guiding, creative God with the world, is so powerful that it requires an effort for a thinker not to fall into thinking of the very aimlessness of the world as intended. Review On Vital Weekly:

When I spot things like 'Liber XXXI' I always approach them with care, as I am never too fond of all those magickal, psychik things. When released by RONF it's bound to be noise, but hey its not. Ctephin is a duo of StF and Aedria, who are responsible for the music. Three hours and some minutes actually, all dealing with Crowley's 'The Book Of The Law' and me thinks that's a bit overdone, even when all three have a distinct different sounds. Book III is obviously the noise end of things whereas Book I the ambient side. Book II lies somewhere in between those ends. But which CDs being more than an hour its all a bit much, certainly Book III is a heavy volume in that respect. Each of the books suffers a bit of too much of the same idea. Once you get the ambient drift of Ctephin playing around with guitars and sound effects, say when half the disc is done, there is not much need to get the other half too. Which goes for the other two releases as well. the nice thing is that they seem to be using different instruments per book, although for II and III its hard to specify that - as the covers aren't always that clear in that respect. I think when these fifty copies are gone, it would be a wise thing to make a selection of all three, picking the best tracks and release a really nice and varied release. Some of these pieces deserve to be heard in a broader context. Nice but too much. (FdW)
